Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has praised the talent of new boy Javier Hernandez. Van der Sar, 39, was on hand to see the Mexico international score a fortuitous goal in his competitive debut for the club. Despite the comical nature of his finish, Hernandez impressed throughout his 45-minute cameo performance as United downed Chelsea 3-1 in the Community Shield.
Following the former Guadalajara striker’s debut, Edwin Van der Sar was convinced ‘Chicharito’ has what it takes to shine on the Old Trafford stage.
He said: “He has been looking good for the last 10 days since he joined us in the United States.
“How he scored does not really matter – the most important thing was for him to get on the scoresheet and for the fans to see a very talented player.
“He is a big prospect. More players are emerging and together with the experienced ones we have to try and bring something back.”
