Edwin van der Sar backs De Gea

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar believes that the club’s current first choice keeper David De Gea played one of the most pivotal roles in the club’s title success last season and he sees the young Spaniard ruling the Manchester United penalty box for many years to come as the club’s first choice shot stopper.

The Dutchman finished his career with the Red Devils in what was a trophy laden spell for him as he won four Premier League titles, two League Cups as well as the UEFA Champions League during his six years spell. And De Gea was handed the near impossible task of stepping into the shoes of one the greatest goalkeepers of all time when they made him the second most expensive goalkeeper in the world to bring him to the club when Van Der Sar hung up his gloves.

He had a very shaky start to life in the Premier League and it seemed the player was unsettled in England and was also burdened with the pressure of taking the mantle from Edwin van der Sar but since then, he has really turned a corner and has been an excellent performer for United as the capped of the last season of Sir Alex Ferguson in charge of the club with the Premier League trophy.

And according to Edwin van der Sar, who now serves as the marketing director of his former club Ajax Amsterdam, the progress the Spaniard has made is absolutely unbelievable. He added that he came from a different league when he was just 20 years old and was immediately handed over the No. 1 shirt at Manchester United but he has risen to the occasion and it can be safely said that United are in good hands for the next decade.
