Van Gaal has come out of retirement to take the Netherlands job, replacing Frank De Boer who was axed after the disappointing last 16 exit to the Czech Republic at Euro 2020. Juventus defender Matthijs De Ligt was sent off in the second half before Patrik Schick and Thomas Holes scored to send the Czechs to the quarterfinals via a 2-0 win over the Dutch team in the last 16 stage at Euro 2020.

Ex-ManchesterUnited goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar congratulated Van Gaal on his new appointment via his official Twitter handle. According to Edwin Van Der Sar, Van Gaal is a great coach who would get the best out of his players.

Van Gaal is the Dutch national team manager for the third time in his career. He was in charge of the Netherlands between 2000 and 2002 for his first spell and between 2012 and 2014 for his second spell. He was in charge when the Netherlands finished third at the 2014 FIFA World Cup tournament in Brazil.

LVG took the Manchester United job immediately after his second spell with the Netherlands and he lasted just two seasons before he was sacked. Van Gaal won the 2016 FA Cup title at Manchester United before leaving the club later that summer. He had one year left on his contract at Old Trafford.

The first game of his third spell as the Netherlands boss is the away game against Norway next month as part of their qualifying campaign for Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Van Gaal has been given a contract until the end of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
