EDWIN VAN DER SAR: NEW CONTRACT

Manchester United number one Edwin van der Sar is reportedly ready to sign a 12 month contract extension at Old Trafford. The 39-year-old veteran was widely expected to retire at the end of the season to leave Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak vying for the number one jersey, however the Sun claim the former Holland international feels he can give the Premier League champions yet another year.

Sir Alex Ferguson has always insisted the decision would rest with Van der Sar, while also maintaining the club’s successor would be promoted from within. The former Fulham stopper was voted UEFA’s top keeper in 2009 having gone a world record 1,311 minutes without conceding.
United continue to be linked with a host of Europe’s top keepers despite Ferguson’s insistence he is happy with his current quota. CSKA Moscow’s Igor Akinfeev and Schalke keeper Manuel Neuer are regularly linked with United

Van der Sar loves Playing

Edwin Van der Sar admits he loves being in the thick of the action for Manchester United.

The Dutch shot-stopper has been plagued by injuries this term and missed United’s start to the campaign as well as a large spell at Christmas.

He’s been key to the Red Devil’s surge in the second part of the season, though, which he says he is thrilled about.

The 39-year-old says that watching or listening to a game instead of playing is hard for him to do.
It’s easier to play

“It is easier to play yourself than watching or listening,” he said. “Listening to the radio is horrible.”

VAN DER SAR SHOCKED AT STAY

Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has admitted he never expected his stay at the club to last as long as it has.

Van der Sar told Inside United: “I still believed I was doing enough to play for a bigger team but you need someone to take a gamble, which Sir Alex Ferguson did. At the time I was 34 so I didn’t expect to be here six years.
Testimonial

“I thought that I would be at United for two years and then maybe go and do something else. Instead I am steadily trying to reach my testimonial.”

He went on: “It was important my wife felt okay with it. If she had said she would rather go back to Holland then we would have done that.

AJAX KEEPER TO SUCCEED VAN DER SAR

Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg is being linked with Manchester United to succeed the incredibily successful Van Der Sar.

Oranje VI reported this week that the Holland No1 is being lined up by United boss Sir Alex Ferguson for a move to Old Trafford in 12 months time.

Ferguson sees Stekelenburg as the ideal successor for his veteran Dutch keeper Edwin van der Sar, who is expected to retire at the end of the coming season.

Stekelenburg is aware of the talk and would jump at the chance of a dream move to United.

VAN DER SAR HAILS HERNANDEZ

Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has praised the talent of new boy Javier Hernandez. Van der Sar, 39, was on hand to see the Mexico international score a fortuitous goal in his competitive debut for the club. Despite the comical nature of his finish, Hernandez impressed throughout his 45-minute cameo performance as United downed Chelsea 3-1 in the Community Shield.

Following the former Guadalajara striker’s debut, Edwin Van der Sar was convinced ‘Chicharito’ has what it takes to shine on the Old Trafford stage.

He said: “He has been looking good for the last 10 days since he joined us in the United States.

“How he scored does not really matter – the most important thing was for him to get on the scoresheet and for the fans to see a very talented player.

“He is a big prospect. More players are emerging and together with the experienced ones we have to try and bring something back.”

HOWARD PRAISES VAN DER SAR

Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard has praised Edwin Van Der Sar for his incredible achievements in his long career and his fitness even at this age. The former Dutch international will turn 40 in October and is into his sixth season with the Red Devils, but is firmly still the club’s No.1.

Van der Sar replaced Howard as the club’s main goalkeeper in 2005, which saw the American move from Old Trafford to become Everton’s first choice a year later. However despite being ousted from the United jersey, Howard hailed his opposite number, who he will face when Everton meet United on Saturday in the Premier League at Goodison Park.

“He’s performed admirably for his club and country for such a long time and he seems to get better and stay at a very high level,” he told Sky Sports News. “That’s not easy to do in that position and at a club like Manchester United.”
