AJAX LOSE AGAIN TO LIVERPOOL

Dutch football giants Ajax Amsterdam were on the receiving end of another defeat when they met Premier League champions Liverpool for the second time in this season’s Champions League. Liverpool and Ajax Amsterdam met for their second and final meeting in Group D. The outcome was the same as what was obtainable in the first meeting at the Amsterdam Arena on matchday one.

Hosts Ajax lost 1-0 to Liverpool in the first meeting after Argentinian left-back Nicholas Tagliaficoscored an own goal. The Reds won their second meeting by the same 1-0 scoreline when they played hosts to Dutch football giants Ajax at Anfield in a matchday five clash played on Tuesday night. The only goal of the game came on 58 minutes after Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper Andre Onana misjudged a cross from young fullback Neco Williams and this paved the way for Curtis Jones to easily score the winning goal and earn his team the three points on offer in the Group D clash.

Ajax Amsterdam have been flying the flag of Dutch football in the Champions League this season but their continued participation is in serious doubts after the latest loss to Liverpool. The win was more than enough to take Liverpool to the next stage of the competition as Group D winners, while Ajax Amsterdam will have to beat Atalanta on matchday six to secure their place in the next stage alongside the Reds.

Ahead of the final matchday, Group D leaders Liverpool have 12 points from five games, while Italian Serie A club Atalanta have eight points from the same number of games and are in second place. Dutch football club Ajax Amsterdam are in third spot on the group standings with seven points from five games, while bottom team FC Midtjylland have a solitary point from the five matches played.
